Our Sea Moss Straight From The Ocean

Our seamoss comes from the coastal region of Tanzania. It comes from a region monitored and controlled by the government. Only local fishermen and farmers has access to permits to harvest this seamoss. This community of famers and fishermen has created local unions to help them conduct business with the seamoss. Upendo foods and minerals give thanks to the Tanzanian government for making sure that the seamoss is of high quality, The eco system is not disrupted due to over harvesting and the local farmers benefit first from this wonderful sea vegetables. Collagen is derived from seamoss. Seamoss is the mother of collagen and most commercial companies buy bulk seamoss for the extraction of collagen.

There are two types of seamoss glacilaria around this region. Kappaphycus alverezii (‘Cottonii’) and Eucheuma denticulatum (‘Spinosum’), these species producing kappa-CGN and iota-CGN, respectively. These are spiny, bushy seaweeds that grow to about 50 cm high in reef or lagoon regions primarily in the Philippines, Indonesia, and East Africa. We buy our seamoss straight from the farmers and sell it straight to our clients without processing. We dry some of the seamoss and grind it into powder. This is currently only available in our African/ Nairobi store
